Introductory gesture technology

The first control device of a machine from the point of view of the machine-man interaction HMI was the switch and buttons , for example to turn on/off the machine, activate a light, a movement or a particular function. Technology evolved and the same functions were replaced by touch technology in which touching a surface in a given position, were made including, the same functions described above.

The above listed above have several drawbacks and the main thing is you have to touch the switch/sensor and/or the touch pad to interact with the machine, with the risk that entails for the human, touching as it can be high temperature, electrically charged and/or not be possible to interact with the machine, which is in an isolated area and not another human being in isolation, among other contingencies.

Currently, there is a gesture recognition technique that employs a video camera and special software for image recognition and tracking, basically. This technology solves the above problems but creates others, such as for example, the need for proper lighting conditions, cost hardware and software, sight between man and machine, among others. The advantages of this new technology with respect to the previous control interfaces are many and varied. They are so numerous that only expose here some way of summary.

  1. Total isolation between man and machine to human security. Ideal for substances in risk prevention. A distance without touching anything of the machine can be controlled. The electrogestual transducer detects motion even with any object that is sandwiched between it and hand. For example the machine can be sealed in a glass urn and the person from outside can control through gestures. And full size.
  2. Cost of  transducer similar to the prior art. For example the cost of this electrogestual transducer on/off replacing traditional light bulb switch is similar. This transducer can be placed in the same hole the traditional switch. Even eliminates mechanisms, as for example in a kitchen or bathroom switch can be embedded behind a tiled tile, without any visible mechanism.
  3. For people with visual impairments and/or cognitive. Needless to read or understand letters or eg other languages ​​, which is the button is pressed ( such as a remote control or keypad elevator ) ; only with a standard gesture function is performed. No need to locate the control, only making the gesture on the transducer is enough. For example for the light switch in the dark, making a wide sweep of the arm , some part of it would enter the detection range of the transducer electrogestual and light the bulb.
  4. Public health and hygiene. This system not having to touch anything prevents infections and diseases. It is well known for example that the two objects with more germs and bacteria in the hotels are the remote control of the TV and lamp switch and without the usual sink and toilet.
  5. Protection of the machine and its decorations. We often have their hands stained with grease car engine oil, food, stained with dust, water, mud for example. Not having to touch anything , do not get dirty the control mechanism of the machine or its trim if present.

The control interface of a gestural device would consist of the following blocks of elements:

  1. Sensor, whose physical variable detection are electric fields.
  2. Processor and digital signal generator. To generate the signal which produces the electric field in the electrode TX and receiving, processing and computing signals receivers ( RX electrodes ) sensor, and indicate in the form of patterns or codes detection, position and movements of the hand.
  3. Controller of the machine. Contains relays, transistors, communications buses and other controls of the machine. Receive processor patterns or codes and previous signals based on these outputs acts on. For example on a relay to activate a motor, a solenoid on to channel a flow of air or fluid, a bulb, a transistor to turn on an electric resistance, etc.

Here is a real example of industrial application, which represents a gestural light switch for homes/offices, the scheme can be seen in the following figure shows:

Figure represents the complete application making the electrical connection (66c) and its corresponding single-line wiring  (66b) embedded in the walls and ceiling (66a). The control element is a light bulb (7) . The block (6) is the gestural switch that is implemented in a single block, with a latching relay. Going hand (2c) from bottom to top (66e) the bulb lights up and down movement (66d) goes out.

Standard different movements of this technology are the following:

  • Down hand.
  • Move hand from right to left direction.
  • Move hand from left to right direction.
  • Turn clockwise hand.
  • Turn hand in anti-clockwise.
  • Free movements forming characters or figures.

With the previous movement sequences can control any device and may standardize control without labels or explanations, making hardly possess a product manual, except for safety precautions. So, you know and manage a gestural device. Stay tuned to our future developments and acquires one!
